With two “killing fields” survivors. Pol Pot was a Cambodian politician who led the Khmer Rouge from 1963 until his death in 1998. As the Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to 1979, he orchestrated a brutal regime aiming to create a classless agrarian society. His government is responsible for the Cambodian genocide, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1.7 to 2.2 million people—about a quarter of Cambodia’s population at the time. The main victims were intellectuals, (including those who wore glasses), ethnic minorities (such as Vietnamese and Cham Muslims), urban residents, priests, monks, and anyone perceived as a threat to his vision of a rural utopia. The Khmer Rouge’s policies led to mass executions, forced labor, starvation, and disease, leaving a lasting scar on Cambodia
